Burnley founded in 1882 playing at Calder Vale. In 1883 they relocated to Turf Moor where they have remained to this day. Originally just a pitch, the first grandstand was completed in 1885. In 1891 the Star stand was put up as well as terracing at both ends of the ground. After the second World War, all four stands were rebuilt. In the 1990s the terraces were replaced with seats, as was common in UK football after the Hillsborough disaster. In 1996 a £5.3m project saw the completion of the largest James Hargreaves stand.
Plans for a £20m development of the stadium were released in 2007. In 2009 following Premiership promotion the capacity was said to be increased to 28,000, however relegation in 2010 put these plans on hold. Promotion again in 2014 paved way for new talks.
